ESA / IPC Harness and Spacecraft Inspector (Space Industry)

The ESA and IPC/WHMA‑A‑620 Space Addendum Inspector is responsible for ensuring that spacecraft electrical and mechanical harnesses meet the highest reliability standards required for operation in extreme space environments. The role focuses on detailed inspection, verification and documentation of wiring, cabling and interconnections to ensure compliance with ESA, ECSS and IPC specifications. The role also includes inspection of mechanical build of the Spacecraft.
Core Responsibilities
• Perform detailed visual inspections of spacecraft harnesses to IPC/WHMA‑A‑620 Space Addendum, ECSS (e.g. ECSS‑Q‑ST‑70‑26) and internal programme standards.
• Verify mechanical integrity, including routing, shielding, lacing, braiding, strain relief, tie locations and bend radii.
• Conduct electrical testing such as continuity, insulation resistance (Hi‑Pot) and connector integrity checks.
• Identify and document non‑conformances, supporting root‑cause investigation and corrective action processes.
• Maintain robust process control within cleanroom environments, ensuring compliance with ESD and FOD protocols.
• Produce accurate and complete inspection documentation, including traveller sheets, NCRs, inspection reports and configuration records.
• Perform KIPs (Key Inspection Points) on spacecraft hardware during build and integration activities.
Key Requirements
• Current or previous certification to ESA/ECSS‑Q‑ST‑70‑26 or ‑28, and IPC/WHMA‑A‑620 Space Addendum.
• Demonstrable experience in high‑reliability harness manufacture or inspection within the space, aerospace or defence sectors.
• Strong ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, engineering drawings and wiring documentation.
• Excellent practical knowledge of ESA‑standard soldering, crimping and termination techniques.
• Experience working in cleanroom environments and under demanding production schedules.
Working Environment
• Cleanroom / controlled production areas.
• High‑pressure, schedule‑driven programmes supporting spacecraft build and test.
